On a snowy January morning in the Town of Clay, Micron Technology officially broke ground on what is being described as the largest private development in New York State history. The ceremonial shovels marked more than the start of construction — they signaled a generational shift for Central New York’s economy, workforce, and future growth.

The massive chipmaking complex, if fully built, would span an area roughly three times the size of the New York State Fairgrounds. While construction will unfold over decades, the groundbreaking alone represents a major milestone more than three years in the making.

A Project Years in the Making

Micron first announced its decision to locate its largest U.S. expansion in Central New York in 2022, drawn by a combination of available land, workforce potential, water access, and unprecedented public investment aimed at reshoring semiconductor manufacturing.

On January 16, 2026, Micron executives joined federal, state, and local officials from across the political spectrum to celebrate the beginning of construction on the 1,400-acre site in Clay. The project is backed by significant federal incentives through the CHIPS and Science Act, along with state and local support, reflecting a broad push to bring advanced manufacturing back to the United States.

Micron plans to build four semiconductor fabrication plants at the site by 2041. The first two are expected to begin production in 2030 and 2033. Together, the initial phase alone represents more than $50 billion in private investment, with the potential for another $50 billion in future expansion.

What This Means for Jobs and the Local Economy

If Micron’s plans come to fruition, the company estimates it will employ 9,000 workers directly in Central New York — rivaling the region’s largest employers. Beyond that, the project is expected to generate tens of thousands of indirect and spinoff jobs, ranging from construction and supply chain roles to education, healthcare, hospitality, and professional services.

During peak construction periods, more than 4,000 construction workers will be needed on-site. Over time, the influx of workers and their families is expected to reshape the economic landscape of Onondaga County and surrounding areas.
