Get a Free Tree in Syracuse: How the ReLeaf Syracuse Program Works

As we head into spring and start thinking about outdoor projects, there’s a great opportunity for Syracuse homeowners to make a lasting impact — both on their property and in the community. Through the ReLeaf Syracuse program, eligible residents can receive a free tree to plant right in their own yard.

It’s a simple way to improve your home’s curb appeal, increase shade, and contribute to a greener, healthier Syracuse.

What Is ReLeaf Syracuse?

ReLeaf Syracuse is a city-led initiative focused on expanding and maintaining Syracuse’s urban tree canopy. The program brings together local organizations, community groups, and city departments with a shared goal: to plant more trees and create a more sustainable, livable environment for residents.

Trees do more than look nice — they help cool neighborhoods, manage stormwater, reduce air pollution, and make our streets more walkable and enjoyable.

How to Get a Free Tree

If you’re a homeowner within the City of Syracuse, you may be eligible to receive a free tree through the program. There are two main ways to participate:

1. Request a Street Tree

The City will plant a tree in the public right-of-way (typically between the sidewalk and curb) at no cost.

You can request one here:
https://www.syr.gov/Departments/Parks-Recreation/Request-a-Free-Tree

Here’s how the process works:

  • Submit a request with your address
  • A staff member will contact you to confirm interest
  • The site is inspected to determine the best location and tree type
  • The tree is planted by city crews or contractors

Trees are carefully selected based on available space, nearby utilities, and long-term growth potential.

2. Yard Tree Giveaway Program

Homeowners can also receive trees to plant on their private property through seasonal giveaway events.

These events typically offer a variety of tree options, including native, flowering, and edible species suited for different yard sizes.

Timeline: When Will You Get Your Tree?

Timing depends on when you submit your request:

  • Submit by June 1 → Tree planted in the fall
  • Submit by December 1 → Tree planted in the spring

For giveaway programs:

  • Events usually take place in spring and fall, when planting conditions are ideal

Because planting is seasonal, it’s a good idea to plan ahead and submit your request early.

Why It’s Worth It

Adding a tree to your property offers both immediate and long-term benefits:

  • Provides shade and helps reduce cooling costs
  • Improves curb appeal and overall property value
  • Supports local wildlife and ecosystem health
  • Helps manage stormwater and reduce runoff
  • Contributes to a greener, more beautiful community

With approximately 60% of Syracuse’s tree canopy located on private property, homeowners play a major role in shaping the city’s environmental future.

A Simple Way to Make a Lasting Impact

Spring is the perfect time to think about improving your outdoor space, and planting a tree is one of the most meaningful upgrades you can make. Through ReLeaf Syracuse, it’s also one of the easiest.

If you’ve been considering ways to enhance your property this year, this program offers a unique opportunity to do something that benefits your home, your neighborhood, and the entire community.
