Celebrate Women’s History Month at Hidden Perspectives: Women’s Lives on the Erie Canal

March is Women’s History Month — a time to reflect on and honor the many contributions women have made throughout history and continue to make in our communities. One meaningful way to do that this month is by attending Hidden Perspectives: Women’s Lives on the Erie Canal, an exhibit highlighting women’s stories connected to one of New York’s most historic transportation routes.

This special exhibition explores the lives of women whose worlds were shaped by the Erie Canal — whether they worked on it, traveled along it, or found inspiration and opportunity because of it. The display brings to light perspectives that are often overlooked, giving visitors a richer understanding of how the canal impacted everyday life and local history.

Event Details

The Hidden Perspectives exhibit runs throughout March 2026, providing plenty of opportunity to stop in and explore:

·         Dates: March 1 through March 31, 2026

·         Location: North Syracuse Community Room, NOPL North Syracuse

100 Trolley Barn Ln, North Syracuse, NY 13212

·         Entrance Fee: FREE!

·         What to Expect: A walk through women’s stories connected to the Erie Canal, featuring historical images and writings that illuminate their roles and experiences.

The exhibit is open during the regular hours of the host location, and typically there is no set admission fee for this type of community display — visitors are simply invited to stop by and take in the exhibit as part of Women’s History Month.

A Rich Local Story in a Historic Setting

This exhibit draws from a vast collection of Erie Canal artifacts and writings and is part of a broader effort to share compelling canal history. The Erie Canal Museum — the organization behind many local canal programs — is housed in the historic Syracuse Weighlock Building, a unique structure dating back to 1850 that once weighed canal cargo.

Even if you visit just for the special Women’s History Month exhibit, the wider museum context offers a deeper appreciation of the canal’s impact on Syracuse and the region.

A Proud Moment for Women’s History and Local Leadership

At BELL Home Team, we are proud to be a woman-owned brokerage serving Central New York. Women have shaped our community in countless ways — from early industry and family life along the canals to leadership roles in business, civic life, and beyond. Celebrating events like Hidden Perspectives reminds us of the important stories that continue to inspire, educate, and connect us.

As you take time this month to recognize and celebrate the remarkable women who’ve shaped history and community, we encourage you to attend this exhibit and explore an important chapter of Central New York’s heritage.
